Step 26: Model Mouth Area

Particularize
(Steps 22 through 29)

Now the time has come to turn a painting into a portrait. Up until now you have been striving to state the broad generalities of the subject — the "big truths." Now you will concentrate on small specifics — the details of the eyes nose and mouth. We call this final step "particularizing."

The halftone planes that surround the mouth are the most difficult part of the portrait. These planes should be expressed as simply — but as accurately — as possible. Here the moustache covers a large area of what would normally require very careful observation. Note that the moustache casts a shadow that adds to the expression of the face. Always use the largest brush possible to do any given task. Just because you are now working in an area of specific detail doesn't mean that you should get 'picky.' Continue to work in a broad, simplified manner.
