Step 24: Model Nose Area

Particularize
(Steps 22 through 29)

Now the time has come to turn a painting into a portrait. Up until now you have been striving to state the broad generalities of the subject — the "big truths." Now you will concentrate on small specifics — the details of the eyes nose and mouth. We call this final step "particularizing."

The nose is a study in planes. Define the three principal planes — the front plane, the shadow plane which gives shape and dimensionality, and the very subtle halftone plane which provides a transition onto the front plane of the face. Each plane is a study in tone and color. Then place the catchlight with decisiveness. The catchlight on the tip of the nose is the most important single brushstroke of the entire painting! You get 'more for your money' with this one stroke than any other. This stroke causes the form of the nose to come forward. Observe the catchlight carefully before placing it. If you're not satisfied with the stroke, wipe it off, replace the tones in the area, and paint the catchlight a second time. Try to get it right with just one stroke.
