Step 23: Paint Eye Details

Particularize
(Steps 22 through 29)

Now the time has come to turn a painting into a portrait. Up until now you have been striving to state the broad generalities of the subject — the "big truths." Now you will concentrate on small specifics — the details of the eyes nose and mouth. We call this final step "particularizing."

The shape of the irises is refined, and the pure black of the pupils is strengthened. The catchlights are placed with a pointed sable, using white with a touch of blue. The small forms that encircle below the eyes are stated. The drawing of the eyebrows is given more precise shape. Note that the upper third of the eye itself is shaded by the upper eyelid. Don't make the catchlights too large. Just a tiny stroke will do it. Put in enough detail to get the character and expression of the eyes. Don't put in every detail you see. For example, such details as eyelashes seldom add much to a panting. Express the character of the eyes.
